Gum recession makes the teeth appear longer. This longer appearance is synonymous with aging.
Gum Tissue Grafting
Gum recession can be the result of years of improper or overly-aggressive brushing, or it can be caused by periodontal disease. Receding gums expose the tooth roots, which increases root sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Also, because the exposed teeth appear longer, your smile is not aesthetically pleasing.
Gum tissue will not naturally grow back once it has receded. If the condition has become severe, Dr. Foutz can perform a gum tissue graft.
In the procedure, tissue is removed from a pocket made in the roof of the mouth and placed between the gum and tooth/bone interface to allow the tissue to attach and form a strong, esthetic band of new gum tissue around the tooth.
Gum grafting uses a patient’s own tissue to cover root surfaces which reduces or eliminates root sensitivity, and prevents further recession.
Proper balance of the gum tissue and teeth is restored producing a much more cosmetic smile line.
