Amalgam fillings, also known as ‘silver’ fillings, will darken and corrode as they age.  Also, since they contain about 50% mercury, amalgam fillings expand and contract in response to hot and cold foods and liquids.

This action, over time, tends to damage and fracture the tooth from the inside causing one of two serious problems to develop:

1- the re-occurrence of decay under the filling which would soon require a root canal procedure, or
2- eventually causing the tooth to crack or break requiring a full crown restoration.

But if you don’t wait for the inevitable to happen, there is a much better and less costly solution – Onlays.

Using advanced bonding techniques, back teeth with large cavities and unsightly silver-amalgam fillings can be beautifully restored with tooth-colored, ceramic onlays.

Onlays preserve more of your natural tooth and cost much less than full crown restorations.
